Wildlife extends beyond Samburu County's formal game reserves into communal rangelands and pastoral territories. These unprotected areas host wildlife populations and represent wildlife habitat despite lacking official reserve status.

The Ewaso Nyiro River ecosystem supports various wildlife species including buffalo, warthogs, baboons, and numerous bird species. Seasonal water availability concentrates wildlife along the river corridor. Pastoral communities coexist with wildlife in riverine areas.

Reticulated giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) range beyond reserve boundaries in suitable acacia woodland habitat. Semi-nomadic pastoral communities coexist with giraffe populations, though land use competition and occasional human-wildlife conflict occur.

Grevy's zebras inhabit suitable grassland areas beyond reserve boundaries. Pastoral communities maintain herds in zebra habitat, creating competition for pasture.

Smaller carnivores including jackals and hyenas inhabit rangelands adjacent to reserves. Lions range across larger territories that may include unprotected areas. Leopards inhabit rocky outcrops and forested areas.

Reptiles including various snake species and lizards are common in semi-arid habitat. Some species like the puff adder pose risks to humans, particularly in settled areas.

Bird diversity is substantial. Arid-adapted species and water-dependent species congregate seasonally along watercourses. Migratory species use northern Kenya as part of broader African migration routes.

Community-based conservation initiatives aim to incentivise local wildlife protection through conservation benefits including employment, wildlife viewing tourism, and product development. These initiatives face sustainability challenges.

Human-wildlife conflict, particularly livestock predation by carnivores, creates tensions between conservation and pastoralist interests. Compensation mechanisms remain inadequate.
